A Warm Invitation to the "Biotechnology Entrepreneurship” (BE) Symposium on September 29 (Friday) at the Ambassador Auditorium

It is our great pleasure to invite you to our upcoming "Biotechnology Entrepreneurship” (BE) Symposium on September 29 (Friday) at the Ambassador Auditorium, Univ. of Windsor.

We are expecting around 100 participants from Canada and United States and the target audience will be a mix of Biotechnology students, researchers and scientists, Biotechnology commercialization professionals, patent intellectuals, policy makers surrounding "Medical Marijuana" issues and grants and funding panelists.
The symposium is geared towards emerging biotechnology professionals – students with an entrepreneurial interest, future technology trend-setters and scientists who are exploring how to commercialize their discoveries (bench to market) as well as existing start-ups aiming for a sustainable future.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry intends to offer the following graduate courses during the Fall 2017 semester which might not be staffed by full-time faculty members as part of their normal teaching load. In accordance with section 54-07 of the 2014-2017 Collective Agreement, the department invites applications from suitably qualified individuals who are interested in teaching the following courses.

Biochemistry & Cell Biology – Lipids & Membranes 03-59-675-01
This course focuses on the biochemistry and cell biology of lipids and their role in cellular signaling, with a particular emphasis on the experimental basis of current knowledge. Topics covered include lipid biochemistry, membrane biophysics, the biochemistry and metabolism of small molecules such as steroids and leukotrienes, and an integrative assessment of the role of lipids and membranes in cellular processes such as protein trafficking and intracellular signaling. (Enrolment restricted to MMB students.)

Biotechnology Entrepreneurship 03-59-690-01
Entrepreneurship in Biotechnology will provide students an introduction to the complexities and unique problems facing the biotechnology industry. Students will be exposed to the topics most critical for successfully founding, financing and operating a life science company, and will be expected to perform many of the same tasks that founders would normally undertake. Discussions with life-science entrepreneurs, evaluation of existing biotechnology firms, case studies based on recent companies and hands-on work developing entrepreneurial endeavors all will be utilized. (Enrolment restricted to MMB students.) (Equivalent to 2 courses.)

Chemistry, Biochemistry and MMB Students Volunteer in the Community

This Fall, our department launched a new course called Development of Leadership, Outreach and Presentation Skills (59-400), which is open to our undergraduate students who are doing their honours theses (59-410).

Volunteer opportunities involve a number of activities internal to Chemistry & Biochemistry and the Faculty of Science, but also include external activities in the community, including working with children and seniors, and volunteering with charitable organizations, churches and hospitals.

It seems that the spirit of volunteerism is catching on in our department!

On Friday, November 11, 2016, eight of our grad students helped out at a fundraising dinner at Assumption/Holy Name Parish (proceeds from the dinner go towards a Youth program in the parish).

Growing Biotech Entrepreneurship hosts Leadership and Pitching workshop 

On Friday February 26th, the Masters of Medical Biotechnology Program and EPICentre collaboratively hosted the Growing BE (Biotechnology Entrepreneurship) workshop at the Katzmann Lounge in Vanier Hall. The workshop saw over 70 students and community members who came out to learn leadership skills and how to pitch themselves in order to achieve their career goals. 

The Lead to Succeed workshop was led by Dr. Anne Snowdon, a professor at the Odette School of Business and chair of the International Centre for Health Innovation, who spoke about technological changes in society today and emphasized the importance of leadership, innovation and adaptation in the ever-changing workplace. Dr. Snowdon touched on developments in the health care system and provided the audience with a framework to get them thinking about what value they could bring to an organization, whether it be an existing company or their own.

MMB Event: Lead to Succeed: Leadership and Pitching

The Master of Medical Biotechnology (MMB) Program, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, with support of EPICentre, is organizing a one day “Lead to Succeed: Leadership and Pitching” (Growing BE) event on Feb 26, 2016 (Friday) on campus at the University of Windsor.

It gives us an immense pleasure in extending a warm invitation to you for your active participation at this event. The event will be held in Katzmaan Lounge,Vanier Hall on campus from 9:30 to 4 PM. Enclosed is the invitation and flyer of the event for more details.

A special feature of this event will be 1 min pitch presentation by every student participating in this event on ANY ONE of the following pitch themes in the afternoon “Pitching” Workshop:

a) Pitch for oral presentations

b) Pitch for a job interview

c) An idea for a start-up company (pitching for investors)

There will be a pitch competition at the very end with great award prizes (Pitching competition guidelines are enclosed).

We will be highly grateful if you may help us in promoting this event at the University of Windsor, and having the word spread among all graduates. Tea with Lee at 3

Food Drive Challenge

The Faculty of Science has challenged all Science departments to a Food Drive.

Since Chemistry & Biochemistry have always been up for a challenge, and determined to win, we are asking that (if you're able to), bring one or two canned goods to the "Tea with Lee" event.

Be sure you bring them to the Chemistry office, #273 Essex Hall.  Do not put them in the big  box in the hallway, as this belongs to the Faculty of Science department.

Suggested canned goods are:  soup, vegetables, fruit, zoodles, pasta sauce, etc.
