Abstract:

Progressing academic research from the initial invention discovery at the bench to industrial application requires significant efforts, including, for example, scaling of materials for testing, development and validation of new systems of a base technology, and optimization of processes. GreenCentre Canada is a Centre of Excellence for Commercialization and Research in the area of Green Chemistry, providing facilities for both academic and industrial partners to evaluate, develop and ultimately find commercial application for novel Green chemical technologies.

To highlight the path towards industrial applications, three projects that have been advanced at GreenCentre will be presented: the development and scale-up of highly active ester hydrogenation catalysts, the immobilization of a number of homogeneous catalysts for application in flow reactors directed to pharmaceuticals generation, and the development and process optimization of a low energy forward osmosis process. Each will have the contribution of the original inventors and additional efforts of GreenCentre to directly address specific industry-based challenges highlighted.

UWindsor making strides in protecting waterways from toxic algae blooms

UWindsor researcher Bulent Mutus has designed and built a filter that can remove potentially harmful phosphates from contaminated water. Phosphates are a naturally occurring mineral, but increased levels in waterways, will substantially reduce water quality.


Phosphates are found in sewage and used in detergents and commercial fertilizers, so runoff from these practices and industries, will throw off the chemical balance of streams, rivers and the lakes. An abundance of phosphates create a nutrient rich environment that can encourage massive growth of some plants and algae.

Mutus’ research project, Large Scale Total Phosphate Filtration System, received almost $160,000 from Environment Canada, Lake Simcoe Georgian Bay Clean-Up Fund (LSGBCUF), for a two-year project to build and test a large scale version of the filtration unit at the Holland Canal in the Holland Marsh, near Barrie Ontario.

“Our filtration technology is a simple and cost effective alternative to current methods,” says Dr. Mutus, biochemistry professor. “It uses inexpensive, environmentally safe methods to remove phosphorus from point sources such as municipal and agricultural wastewater.”

The Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER-UW) and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (Chem/Biochem) at the University of Windsor invite outstanding candidates to apply for a Tenure-Track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Environmental Chemistry, commencing as early as July 1, 2014 or soon thereafter. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

GLIER-UW and Chem/Biochem are research intensive units with active and vibrant graduate programs with diverse sources of external funding within the Faculty of Science. The successful candidate will have a joint-appointment with the two units in the Faculty of Science. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active research program and mentor graduate students in aquatic nutrient chemistry dynamics as related to primary production in aquatic ecosystems and support GLIER-UW’s mission (aquatic resource sustainability with a focus on interacting multiple stressors). Particularly exciting opportunities exist for research on the eutrophication crisis in the lower Great Lakes, while expertise in large-lake nutrient stress in general would be an asset. Expertise and experience in analytical methods development, chemical cycling, bioavailability and modeling and their application to environmental research approaches are considered strong assets. Existing GLIER-UW faculty members work on aquatic environmental processes and issues and have strengths in ecological tracers, fisheries, conservation and evolutionary genetics, invasion biology, ecotoxicology, predictive ecology, biogeochemistry, large-system modeling and nutrient/metal/chemical dynamics.

The ideal candidate must possess a PhD, in Chemistry and/or Environmental science with subsequent interests in developing and delivering training in instrumental analyses related to analytical chemistry in environmental systems. Teaching duties will be assigned in Chem/Biochem and shared with graduate teaching and supervision duties within the GLIER-UW graduate program.

In addition, an outstanding record of research productivity, and a willingness to work in a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary research environment is expected. Significant financial resources and dedicated laboratory space are associated with this faculty position. The appointee will have access to state-of-the-art facilities including laboratories for trace organics and metals, heavy and light stable isotopes, applied molecular genetics and genomics/proteomics, toxicology, fish husbandry, GIS, computational simulation modeling, analytical and aqueous geochemistry and microscopy. In addition, a recently successful large infrastructure grant has established new facilities for advanced field and lab research, with particular focus on environmental stressors in the Great Lakes under the broad themes of biogeochemical function, genomics/proteomics and ecosystem tracers.
